Mumbai Indians lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah, playing his first match after recovering from a toe injury, has returned to the side for their clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium Mumbai on April 7. Bumrah’s return will give the team the much needed strengthens in the form of his bowling strength in the bowling department. Check out cricket bhav app — your trusted cricket exchange sites

Why Jasprit Bumrah Missed the Earlier Matches

Bumrah has been taking his time to recover from a stress fracture in his lower back after his faltering Australian Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the SCG on January 4th, 2025. Bumrah was not awarded the Champions Trophy win after being sidelined with a back injury. So far Bumrah has not suffered any back injury since he had a surgery in March 2023.

Effect on Mumbai Indians Combination

How Bumrah’s return alters the Mumbai Indians’ playing XI. His ability to bowl with the new ball and at the death puts the Knight Riders in possession of an edge that they did not have in the opening matches.

Strengthening the Death Overs

The major chink MI had throughout its opening games was repeated costly runs in the last overs. The lack of Bumrah was an irreparable deficiency and mistered no menacing bowler in the death. It was hard work for the opposition to keep the lid on games with those pre-exposed cricketers Topley and Boult in the attack. Bumrah’s comeback gives Mumbai Indians control in key phases of the game.

Experience, Leadership in High-Stress Situations

With Bumrah brings his mastery on to the field and it is his calmness that complements his tactical thought process so well. He has won many titles with his IPL sides and in his being part of the Mumbai Indians when they won titles, he knows what it takes to navigate those high pressure games. Bumrah’s mentor M will be inspiration for the next potential young players like Ashwani Kumar and Raj Bawa who are currently at their early development stage.

What Bumrah will be up to In The Next RCB Game

Bumrah will have to bring the A-Game to end the RCB bats, which has the likes of Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar in its ranks. Couple this with the fact that he’s been quite successful at bowling yorkers so far, and his wealth of options come in useful for stymieing RCB’s explosive batting plans.

Roadmap to Bumrah’s Comeback

The pacer officially checked into the Mumbai Indians camp on April 6 after passing his final fitness examination at the NCA. Mahela Jayawardene is available for the match against RCB, but the Mumbai Indians are likely to be conservative when it comes to playing him, since he has been out of cricket for a long time.

Rehab Milestones:

  • January 2025: Post-op rest begins.

  • March 2025: Bowls in light training sessions at 50%bowl at 70% pace.

  • April 1–5, 2025: Intensity controlled session and practice matches at NCA.

What It Means for MI’s Play-Off Hopes

MI have only managed one win out of their four matches and that has seen them power down to the bottom half of the table. Three main vulnerabilities of MI’s batting order are addressed with Bumrah coming into the squad.

  1. Powerplay Wickets: The fast bowler has scalped the most number of wickets against RCB as he has dismissed 29 opponents in IPL career.

  2. Death overs (16–20): When Bumrah is fielding for MI, the team has kept a 11.2 economy rate which comes down to under 8.5 when he bowls balls in a game.

  3. Mentoring: For Akash Madhwal and other young players, there’s a lesson in pace variation and length delivery that they just received from Bumrah.

Challenges Ahead

  1. Match Fitness: Bumrah’s last competitive match was in Jun 2025. It might take a while to get the rhythm down.

  2. Workload Management: MI need to manage his workload keeping in mind the upcoming England Tests to not burn him out.

Fan and Expert Reactions

The announcement video, titled “Ready to Roar,” which featured Bumrah’s wife, Sanjana, and son Angad in a Game of Thrones-inspired script, became an internet sensation. The SRH man Nitish Reddy expressed excitement to face him, and termed it a “golden challenge.”
